Key Tourist Sights:

Although now lying in ruins, St Andrews Cathedral is a very interesting place to visit. It dates back to the 12th century, and during the Reformation it was destroyed. However, even from the ruins you can get a sense of how impressive the cathedral once was. It used to be one of the most important religious sites in Europe.

St Andrews Castle dates back to about 1200 and overlooks the sea. It has played an important role in Scottish history, and you can learn all about this in the fascinating visitor centre.

St Andrews Botanic Garden is a very beautiful garden where you can find over 8,000 species of trees and plants. The collection comprises plants native to the region as well as others from all over the world, and it makes for a very interesting visit.

A more recent feature is the secret bunker which was kept a secret for the best part of 40 years. This bunker is hidden below ground under some houses, and there is 24,000 square feet of accommodation, all of which is 100 feet below the earth. Now open to visitors, it provides a unique insight into the government's preparations at the time of the Cold War.

St Andrews is famous across the world as being the home of golf. It is here that you will find The Old Course which has hosted The Open Championship a number of times, and it is also home to the R&A, which is widely considered the sport's governing body. It is also home to the Royal and Ancient Golf Club which was founded in 1754.

St Andrews is also well known for its university, which is the oldest in Scotland. It has gained more international attention in recent years for being the place where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge met whilst studying here.

The city is also known for having some very fine beaches. In fact, the opening scenes of 'Chariots of Fire' were filmed on the West Sands. They are also a great place for walking and various sports like kitesurfing.
