The Shetlands had a brush with disaster in January 1993 when the MV Braer oil tanker ran aground off its coast. Luckily, the oil was not the worst kind of crude oil, and some powerful storms helped to clean up the spillage.

The Shetlands are known for their long history, and humans are known to have inhabited the islands since the Mesolithic. The islands did not officially become a part of Scotland until the 15th century.

The Shetland Isles are also known for their knitting. This has been an important skill and trade here for many centuries. Shetland lace is a very fine lace which was popular back in the Victorian times and was worn by Queen Victoria herself.
