Key Tourist Sights:

If you enjoy visiting old buildings then Torossay Castle is a must. You'll find this castle built in the Baronial style of Scotland, and the gardens are particularly beautiful and worth spending some time exploring. There is also a café to stop off in for refreshments.

Glegorm Castle is another interesting tourist attraction which you'll find near to Tobermory, and another castle you may want to visit is the 13th century Duart Castle near to Lochdonand, which has a spectacular view from its cliff-top setting.

Golfing enthusiasts should make a beeline for Tobermory Golf Club which has a 9-hole course on top of a cliff which is a challenge not least because of the distractions provided by the stunning views.

One of the main tourist attractions is the island of Iona, where a monastery was first founded about 1,500 years ago. The abbey which is found there now dates back to the 13th century. It was on the island that the early Scottish kings were buried.

You should also not miss the opportunity to go on a whale-watching tour. The minke whale is the one to look out for, although there is plenty of other wildlife to spot.

Best Known For:

The Isle of Mull has an almost unfair amount of spectacular wildlife to enjoy. Here you will find not only herds of deer, minke whales, seals, golden eagles, otters, orcas and dolphins, but you will also be able to spot the rarest and the largest bird of prey to be found in Britain: the white-tailed sea eagle. These are one of the biggest attractions to the island and bring in a huge amount of tourism.

The Isle of Mull is also connected with the legend of a Spanish galleon which sank somewhere near Tobermory Bay which was filled with gold. The identity of the ship is disputed, as is whether it even exists, and certainly no treasure has ever been found.

During World War 2 the island was a restricted area and a naval base was set up at Tobermory Bay.
