Kilmainham Gaol is the most famous prison in Ireland, although it is no longer in use. Many famous prisoners have been held here over the years since it was built at the end of the 18th century, and it was here that the leaders of the Ester Rising in 1916 were executed.

Dublin Castle dates back to the beginning of the 13th century. The record tower is one of the highlights, and you will also see the State Apartments which is used for official functions. The visitor centre is very interesting and it is a great place to visit for a few hours.

Guinness is the drink that Ireland is known for around the world, and it was in Dublin back in 1759 that the Guinness brewery was founded. It remains an important part of the city's heritage.

Dublin is known for its literary heritage, and the city has produced a slew of excellent writers over the years which led it to be named in 2010 as a UNESCO City of Literature. Writers who have emerged from the city include James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, William Butler Yeats, Samuel Beckett and George Bernard Shaw.

Dublin has also produced many top bands including U2, The Dubliners, Westlife, Boyzone, My Bloody Valentine and Sinéad O'Connor.
