Key Tourist Sights:

The Botanic Gardens in Belfast are well worth a visit if you want to enjoy some peace and quiet in beautiful surroundings. They date back to Victorian times and you will find two buildings here as well as a bowling green, playground and of course a spectacular array of plants and trees.

One of the main future attractions of the city is Titanic Belfast which will open in April 2012. This major attraction will be located next to the construction site of the famous ship in a six-floor building and will tell the story of the 'unsinkable' ship.

Ulster Museum is where you can get up close and personal with Egyptian Mummies and dinosaur skeletons. You can find out all about the history of the area through a large collection of artefacts and enjoy a fantastic art collection.

If you want an authentic drinking experience then head to the Crown Liquor Saloon, a gin palace dating back to 1826. This famous landmark is a great place to enjoy a drink and a meal in historic surroundings.

You may also want to head to the top of one of the two mountains which provide a backdrop to the city, Divis and Black Mountain. The views from the top of either are magnificent and it is a great way to get out and enjoy the countryside at the same time.

Best Known For:

A number of famous people have been born in Belfast over the years, including C S Lewis, George Best, Van Morrison and Kenneth Branagh.

Belfast is unfortunately connected in the minds of many with The Troubles because of the many bombings and attacks that took place here between 1969 and 1997. But following the Good Friday Agreement back in 1998 it has become a lot safer.

The RMS Titanic was built in Belfast by the shipbuilders Harland and Wolff, who at the time had the largest shipyard in the world. This seems fitting because a century ago it was the second most important city in the British Empire, and it also boasted the biggest linen industry in the world.
