One of Weimar's most famous residents was the composer Bach, and you can see a replica of the house which he used to live in after the original building was destroyed during the war.

The Duchess Anna Amalia Library used to be a palace until it was converted into a library in the 18th century. It has a collection of literature dating back to the 9th century, and contains over a million volumes. It suffered a terrible fire a few years ago, which saw some of its priceless collection destroyed, but the building has since been restored.

Freidrich Nietzsche lived in Weimar for the last three years of his life, and the building in which he died was converted into a memorial to the philosopher where you can learn more about him.

It is a place with an important cultural heritage, and is also the place where the first democratic constitution of Germany was signed after World War I. It was also one of the main centres of the German Enlightenment.

Due to its cultural significance, many places within the city have been designated as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

It is also known for being near to the Buchenwald Concentration Camp, which was built by the Nazis in 1937. Nearly 57,000 people are estimated to have died here.
