One of Weimar's most famous residents was the composer Bach, and you can see a replica of the house which he used to live in after the original building was destroyed during the war.

One of the most haunting experiences in Weimar is to take a trip to the nearby Buchenwald Concentration Camp. This is located just five miles from the city, and nearly 57,000 people died here over the course of eight years. Now there is a museum and a memorial here, and it is a very sombre experience.

Goethe Museum is housed in the building that Johann Wolfgang von Goethe used to live in. He lived in this house in Weimar when he wrote 'Faust', his most famous work, and you can find out all about his life and work here.

The Duchess Anna Amalia Library used to be a palace until it was converted into a library in the 18th century. It has a collection of literature dating back to the 9th century, and contains over a million volumes. It suffered a terrible fire a few years ago, which saw some of its priceless collection destroyed, but the building has since been restored.

Freidrich Nietzsche lived in Weimar for the last three years of his life, and the building in which he died was converted into a memorial to the philosopher where you can learn more about him.

A number of famous people have lived in Weimar over the years, including Johann Sebastian Bach, Freidrich Nietzsche, Johann Wolfgang von Goeth, Friedrich Schiller and more. It is a place with an important cultural heritage, and is also the place where the first democratic constitution of Germany was signed after World War I. It was also one of the main centres of the German Enlightenment.

Due to its cultural significance, many places within the city have been designated as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

It is also known for being near to the Buchenwald Concentration Camp, which was built by the Nazis in 1937. Nearly 57,000 people are estimated to have died here.
