Key Tourist Sights:

One of the most interesting areas of Nuremberg is the Old Town. Here you can walk around and visit highlights including the the Imperial Castle, which was the official residents of the kings of Germany for five centuries up to 1571, and the Heilig-Geist-Spital, a large hospital from the Middle Ages.

Another top attraction in the Old Town is the house of Albrecht Dürer, the famous Northern Renaissance painter. It has now been converted into a museum where you can discover all about the life of the artist, and there are also some original paintings on display.

Nuremberg was the location of some of the largest Nazi rallies in the build up to World War II, and you can visit the remains of the areas in which the rallies were held.

Visit Congress Hall and you will be able to find an exhibition looking at the rise of Naziism and the party rallies, which is both disturbing and fascinating.

You should also make sure you visit the Palace of Justice where there is a museum detailing the Nuremberg Trials. This was the building where many Nazi officials were charged with their crimes, and you may even want to visit the courtroom where the trials were carried out.

Best Known For:

Nuremberg is mainly known for the Nuremberg Trials, which took place after the end of World War II. Here a large number of Nazi war criminals were tried for crimes against humanity. The trials took place here rather than in Berlin because of the popularity of Nuremberg for the Nazi rallies and the symbolic significance of the city.

Nuremberg's history stretches much further back than World War II, however. In the 15th century it was known for its contribution to astronomy, and Johannes Mueller built an observatory here in 1471. It was here that Albrecht Dürer created the first charts of the stars in 1515, and the work of Nicolaus Copernicus was published here in 1543.

Nuremberg has a few regional specialities, including the Nürnberger Bratwurst which is slightly different from other bratwursts because it is smaller. If you are here at Christmas you may also be able to try the Nürnberger Lebkuchen which is a type of ginger bread.
