Key Tourist Sights:

Leipzig has a very attractive botanical garden which is the oldest of its kind in Germany and in the world, dating back to 1542 or earlier. It is 3.5 hectares in size, and is cared for by the university. It is free to enter, and you can spend a few hours exploring the impressive collection of exotic plants and trees.

There is a monument to the famous composer Felix Mendelssohn outside of St Thomas Church. The original was taken down by the Nazis, and a new one was finally erected in 2008. The church outside which the monument is located was also the church where the composer Bach used to work, and where he was laid to rest.

Another monument worth visiting, albeit on a far grander scale, is Völkerschlachtdenkmal, which is one of the biggest monuments to be found in Europe. It was built following a successful battle against Napoleon.

Another church you may want to visit is St Nicholas Church. This is a historic building in the city because during the 1980s a weekly prayer held each Monday led to the Monday Demonstrations against the German Democratic Republic.

Best Known For:

Leipzig has always been a trade city, and it first emerged in this role because it was located at the spot where two of the most important trade routes crossed during the Roman Empire.

It is also a historic city for the role it played in the fall of communism. This started with the events at St Nicholas Church and the Monday Prayers which later turned into the Monday Demonstrations. The prayers began in 1983, and the demonstrations began in 1989.

The famous composer Johann Sebastian Bach worked in Leipzig from 1723 to 1550 where he worked at Thomaskirche as Cantor of the Thomasschule, and in other churches in the city.
