Best Known For:

The Docklands is a very important area of London and has been since Roman times. It is famous for being the location of the huge docks which were built during the Industrial Revolution by companies such as the West India Company so that ships could stop right next to their factories.

Although it was one of the most important areas in the country for powering the Industrial Revolution, it is also known for having fallen into decay in the 20th century as the new container system adopted by the shipping industry was not suitable for the docks. But since then it has been completely regenerated and is now one of the premier destinations in London.

Canary Wharf is one of the tallest and largest buildings in the whole of the UK, and it is a symbol not only of the Docklands but of London as well.

The Docklands is known for being one of the most important business districts in London, but at the same time it is known for its excellent bars and restaurants.

As well as being at the centre of the Industrial Revolution, the docks suffered heavily during World War Two when the area was bombarded with over 2,500 bombs during raids on the capital, causing extensive damage.
