Best Known For:

Wolverhampton is known as the place where the first car to hold the land speed record of over 200 mph was built. The Slug was built by Sunbeam Cars and broke the record in Florida. The city was a very important place for the motor industry from the 19th century onwards.

The wool trade was also important in Wolverhampton up until the 16th century, and this is still evident today in many of the streets and buildings. It was responsible for much of the growth and prosperity of the city.

There are a number of well-known music bands which come from Wolverhampton, including Slade and Cornershop, and the drum-and-bass legend Goldie also comes from here.

The city also has a well-known football club, Wolverhampton Wanderers, also known by their nickname the Wolves, which started up in 1877 and was one of the founding members of the Football League.
