Key Tourist Sights:

Southend Pier is one of the biggest attractions in the town. Its claim to fame is that it is the longest pleasure pier anywhere in the world. It dates back to 1830, and despite a number of fires over the years it is still standing. The museum on the pier is the highlight and here you will find out about the story of the pier as well as the town.

The Central Museum is housed in an Edwardian library, and it is a great way to find out more about the town and surrounding area. It also contains a fantastic photo archive which is worth a visit on its own.

The Cliff Lift was built in 1912 to carry passengers up and down the cliff and it is a fun way to get to the top and enjoy some good views.

For fun for all the family head to Adventure Island, the main theme park in the area. There are lots of rides here and four roller coasters, so it is easy to spend a whole day here.

For a different form of entertainment a trip to New Empire Theatre is in order where you can find a selection of films, music concerts and theatrical performances.

Best Known For:

Southend is most famous for its pier. In 1897 an extension was built onto it which made it the longest pier in the world, and it is still very popular with visitors to the town despite being damaged by fires on four occasions, the latest one being in 2005.

Southend is primarily known for being a tourist destination. The pier is just one of the attractions, and its beach, amusement arcades, theme park and the ‘golden mile’ from Adventure Island to the Kursaal mean that it is very popular with tourists.

Famous people from Southend include the musician Tina Cousins who was born here, opera singer Robert Lloyd, actress Helen Mirren, tennis player John Lloyd, historian Simon Schama and comedian Phil Jupitus.
