Reading Abbey is one of the most important attractions in the town. It is located on a site of 30 acres, and although it now lies in ruins it is still very interesting. It dates back to 1121 and Henry I is buried in the Abbey Church.

Reading Museum is the best way to find out more about the history of the town. It has a number of interesting collections, including one on the history of biscuits in the town, as well as a 70-metre copy of the Bayeux Tapestry and numerous artefacts including coins, jewellery and mosaics.

The Berkshire Medical Heritage Centre makes for an interesting visit. It looks at the developments in medicine that have been made throughout the region, including at the hospital itself. There are a number of original instruments on display as well as pictures and documents.

The Cole Museum of Zoology dates back over a century and contains one of the best displays of zoological items outside of London.

Basildon Park is also an interesting place to visit in Reading. It consists of an impressive mansion, both on the inside and outside, and was designed by 18th-century architect John Carr.

Best Known For:

Reading is famous for hosting one of the biggest rock festivals in the UK, the Reading and Leeds Festival. This takes place in both locations over the same weekend in August, and attracts some of the biggest names in rock as well as thousands of music fans.

Reading Abbey was famous for being one of the centres of pilgrimage in medieval times due to the number of relics that it held, including its most famous one, the hand of St James.

Lots of famous names are associated with Reading, including Charlie Brooker, Kate Middleton, Kate Winslet, Ricky Gervais, Chris Tarrant and Sam Mendes who were all born here. Jane Austen also went to school at Reading Ladies’ Boarding School in the abbey.
