The City Museum and Art Gallery is housed inside an Edwardian building and boasts a very impressive collection of art and historical artefacts. Here you will find natural and historical artefacts, photography as well as paintings by Turner and other famous artists.

The National Marine Aquarium is the biggest aquarium in Britain where you will be able to explore a huge array of sea life. The highlight is the underwater tunnel where you can walk right underneath the aquarium and admire the animals and the shipwreck from a different angle.

An interesting feature of Plymouth is Charles Church, a ruined church which is situated on a roundabout. It has been left here to remind residents and visitors of what Plymouth had to suffer during the blitz.

During a trip to the Barbican Glassworks you will be able to watch glassblowers working in their workshop. It is a really impressive skill and you could literally sit and watch them for hours.

The Elizabethan House is also worth a visit. It is a timber-framed house located on a cobbled street, and it still has many of its original features. It dates back to 1600, and it has been restored to how it would look in its day, providing an interesting insight into how people lived 400 years ago.

Best Known For:

Plymouth has long has a reputation as an important port, and it is well known as being the starting place for some very famous trips. One of the most famous of these was when the Pilgrim Fathers left for America from the Mayflower Steps. Another was taken by Sir Francis Drake when he went out to fight the Spanish Armada. It was also the start and finish point of the first solo circumnavigation around the world carried out by Sir Francis Chichester.

Plymouth is also home to the oldest working bakery anywhere in the world. It is incredible to think that Jackas Bakery was operating during the time of the Spanish Armada.

It is also the home of the oldest working distillery in England, Black Friars, which has been producing Plymouth Original Strength Gin since 1793.
