Key Tourist Sights:

One of the main attractions of any trip to Norwich lies just outside the city. The Norfolk Broads is one of the most attractive natural areas in the country, and if you get the chance then a boat trip along the canals, or even a country walk, is highly recommended.

If you enjoy historical gardens then you might want to visit the Plantation Garden, which is a three-acre garden dating back over 140 years. You’ll find a large gothic fountain, woodlands, a huge Victorian greenhouse and a number of other features here.

Norwich Castle is one of the most famous landmarks of the city. It dates back over 900 years and comprises an art gallery and museum with some fantastic collections. There is even an Egyptian tomb on display complete with mummies, and it houses the biggest collection of ceramic teapots in the world.

The cathedral is another of the highlights. It is one of the best Romanesque cathedrals in Europe and it has the second-highest spire in England. It also has over 1,000 roof sculptures.

For entertainment, head to Norwich Theatre Royal where you can catch performances in dance, opera, comedy, drama and music.

Best Known For:

Norwich is known for its mustard. One of the most famous brands of mustard in the world, Colman’s, was founded here in 1814. You can even visit the Colman’s Mustard Shop during a trip to the city.

Another thing that the city is famous for is canaries. This is because in the 16th century weavers from the Netherlands arrived in the city and brought their canaries, which quickly caught on with other residents so that the city became famous for them. The local football team is even named after them.

Some famous people connected with Norwich include Admiral Horatio Nelson who learned his sailing skills on the Norfolk Broads, Elizabeth Fry, the social reformer, who was born here in the 18th century, Anna Sewell, the author of Black Beauty, who wrote her famous book whilst staying on the outskirts of the city, and the author Philip Pullman who was born here.
