One of the best areas to visit in Newcastle is Quayside, where you will find plenty of bars and restaurants along with a buzzing atmosphere in the evenings. It is also here that you will find the Gateshead Millennium Bridge over the River Tyne, which is now one of the iconic features of the city after being erected in 2000.

Another bridge worth seeing which also spans the River Tyne is the High Level Bridge which was designed by Robert Stephenson.

Just outside of the city on the A1 is one of the most famous sculptures in the UK, the Angel of the North. This large steel sculpture by Antony Gormley was erected in 1998, and although some were opposed to it at first, it is now an icon of the North East.

For art lovers, the Laing Gallery is a must. It is widely considered to be the best art collection in the North East, and has other artefacts on display besides art including pottery and costumes.

The Castle, made up of the Castle Keep and the Black Gate, is also worth visiting. It was built on the site of the castle constructed in 1080 by the son of William the Conqueror, which gave Newcastle its name.
