Key Tourist Sights:

Lincoln Cathedral is the third-largest cathedral in England, and it’s impossible to miss it from most places in the city due to its size and its location on top of a hill. It is also renowned for being an excellent example of Gothic architecture. It’s especially impressive at night when it is lit up from the outside.

If you feel like a walk then you may be interested in doing some of the Tennyson Trail. This leads around the local area and takes you right into the countryside to various locations that are related to Tennyson such as the village in which he used to live and areas that provided him with inspiration. However, it is 130 miles long so it’s best to choose a short section rather than attempt the whole thing.

Lincoln Castle dates back to 1068 and is important for being the location where one of the four remaining copies of the Magna Carta is currently being kept on loan from Lincoln Cathedral. There’s also a great view from here over the surrounding countryside.

Best Known For:

Lincoln was a very important city after the Norman invasion in 1066, shown by the size of the castle which was built here soon after. It was later a prominent city during the Industrial Revolution where it specialised in heavy engineering and saw the foundation of a number of famous companies such as Ruston.

Lincoln City F.C. is the football team of the city, and although it does not have a long history of major trophies, it holds the dubious honour of being the first team to suffer relegation from the Football League in 1987.

A number of famous people are connected with Lincoln, including John Hurt who went to school here, the mathematician Angas Scott who was born here, and William Byrd, the famous composer, who was also born here.

Lincoln is also curious in that it is a port city despite being 40 miles away from the sea. This is because it is an inland port, and this helped it to become an important trade centre over the centuries.
