When you head to Derby make sure you pay a visit to the Derby Museum and Art Gallery. There is lots to see here including paintings by Joseph Wright, the famous 18th-century artist from Derby, as well as historical and archaeological artefacts.

Another good museum to check out is Pickford’s House, which is a Georgian house built by the architect Joseph Pickford. The museum inside contains artefacts and decorations from Georgian times to reveal how life used to be in that era.

Derby Cathedral is one of the main landmarks of the city, and if you go up to the top then you can enjoy some fantastic views. One of the things you will want to see is the tomb of Bess of Hardwick, and it is also connected to St Mary’s on the Bridge which is a chapel dating back to the 14th century.

Don’t miss Derby’s UNESCO World Heritage Site when you are here. The Derwent Valley Mills is a 15-mile stretch along the valley where you will find some of the first ever factories in the world because it was here where the factory system was first created in the 18th century.

Derby is a very green city, and there are over 300 green spaces to enjoy, so perhaps simply wandering around and taking in the atmosphere is the best way to pass the time here.

Best Known For:

The first water-powered silk mill in Britain started operating in Derby in the 18th century. This was due to the invention of the Derby Rib Attachment which was patented in 1759 by Jedediah Strutt, and was nothing short of revolutionary. As a result, some of the first factories and mills in the world were located here.

The painter Joseph Wright, who is known for his use of light in paintings, lived in Derby, as did Joseph Pickford, the 18th-century architect.

Derby is also well known for its Royal Crown Derby china which is famous all over the world, and you can take a trip to the visitor centre to find out more about the history of this famous product.
