Key Tourist Sights:

The main site in Canterbury, and the reason most people visit the city, is the cathedral which has been a site of worship for over 1,000 years. The impressive building is not only one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the country, but it is also the most important, being as it is the cathedral of the Archbishop of Canterbury. Pilgrimages have been made here over many centuries, and it continues to be a point of pilgrimage to this day.

Another historical site of importance includes the City Walls which date back nearly 2,000 years. Despite its age visitors can still admire long stretches of the wall, which includes towers and gatehouses.

The Roman Museum provides a fascinating insight into the city during the time of the Romans. Located underground, it includes the remains of a house and a reconstruction of a market, and visitors can even touch real artefacts.

Canterbury Castle is another interesting historic building to explore. It dates back to the time of the Norman conquest, and was later turned into a jail.

To get out and explore the countryside head to Blean Woods Nature Reserve. This large area of protected land is a great place to go bird spotting and enjoy the fine natural surroundings of the city.

Best Known For:

Canterbury is the headquarters of the Church of England and the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury. It has therefore seen a large number of archbishops pass through over the years, the most famous of whom was arguably Thomas Becket who was murdered here in 1170.

Canterbury is also connected with Chaucer who wrote the Canterbury Tales, which has a very important role in English literature and contains different tales told by pilgrims heading to the city.

Queen Elizabeth II, Pope John Paul II and Mahatma Gandhi are just a few of the famous people to visit the city over the years. The Lord of the Rings actor Orlando Bloom was also born here.
