Key Tourist Sights:

The most famous building in Brighton is the Royal Pavilion, a marvellous structure which was built in 1784 and became the holiday home of the Prince Regent soon after. It was later rebuilt in an Indian style which makes it very distinctive. A tour of the building is well worth making, and the impressive dining hall is spectacular.

Brighton has two piers, the Palace Pier and the now derelict West Pier. The Palace Pier is a major tourist attraction, and has been ever since it was built at the end of the 19th century. Here you will find funfair rides and entertainment, arcades, restaurants and bingo.

The Clock Tower is located in the centre of Brighton and dates back to 1897 when it was built for Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, and it is worth a quick look whilst in the city.

The Sea Life Centre is a great attraction for the whole family. The aquarium dates back to Victorian times and you will find sharks, turtles and a large variety of sea creatures here. It is an important reminder of the significance of the sea to this coastal resort.

The Theatre Royal is an excellent place to catch a performance. It was first opened in 1806 and continues to put on excellent performances, especially classical pieces, so makes sure you check it out.

Best Known For:

Brighton is well known for its large gay population, and it is sometimes referred to as the ‘gay capital’ of the UK. One of the biggest gay events to take place here is the Gay Pride carnival in August.

The Royal Pavilion is recognisable all over the country and it is easy to see why. This palace built in an Indian style is very distinctive, and was a popular retreat for George, Prince of Wales in the 19th century.

Brighton is a very popular tourist destination for people across the country, and it is especially popular with day trippers from London because it is so easy to reach. Its pier and beach, along with the amusements and entertainment, mean that it is still one of the most popular tourist destinations on the south coast.

Brighton is also known for being the setting for the film ‘Quadrophenia’ and the classic book ‘Brighton Rock’.
