Best Known For:

Birmingham has a long and impressive music heritage, and a number of famous acts have come from here including Duran Duran, Ocean Colour Scene and The Streets. Ozzy Osbourne also grew up here, and the city became the birthplace of heavy metal with such groups as Black Sabbath and Judas Priest forming here.

One of the most famous people to be connected with Birmingham is J. R. R. Tolkien who was brought up here. He later explained how inspiration for some of his most famous works came from the surrounding area.

Birmingham is well known for its two main football teams, fierce rivals Aston Villa and Birmingham City. A trip here on the day of the derby at either Villa Park or St Andrew’s is one of the highlights of the calendar.
