A Visitor guide to Agadir, Morocco

On February 29th in 1960 Agadir, Morocco was almost completely annihilated by an earthquake that lasted an agonizing 15 seconds. The city and all its history was buried in rubble. Morocco’s King Muhammad V saw the devastation at Agadir and proclaimed that if destiny decided the destruction of Agadir then rebuilding the city will depend of faith and will. Agadir began its reconstruction the following year and has flourished since.

The city of Agadir is located at the base of the Atlas Mountains along the Atlantic coastline where near the Souss River. Due to its proximity to both the Souss River and Atlantic Ocean Agadire is considered an important port for both fishing and commercial transport. It was the first “sardine” port in the entire world. Since most of the city was demolished in the earthquake of 1960 its architecture is more modern than its neighboring cities and much of it is adopted from some of Europe’s more conventional styles. This coastal resort town has much to offer in the way of beaches as well as large, modern hotels, bustling shopping areas, and amazing restaurants and cafes. One thing is certain: Agadir is the most unique city in all of Morocco.

Hotel Timouley is considered the best place to stay in all of Morocco, and at £200 ($140) a night you can live in the lap of luxury for little more than you’d spend on a conventional hotel in the states. Hotel Timouley offers amazing services rendered by an equally amazing staff. Every meal is on the house and presented in an all-you-can-eat buffet manner. Their motto is “The customer is King!” Who’d want to argue with that?

There are also plenty of cheap hotels in Agadir for folks on a stricter budget. For cheap hotels in Agadir one should visit either the Igoudar Aparthotel or the Hotel Sud Bahia. They are incredibly cheap at less than $50 US dollars a night and still offer many services one would only likely find at pricier accommodations. There are plenty of other cheap hotels in Agadir for less than £30 ($50), so there are plenty to choose from if one doesn’t quite suit you.

There are some very unique things to see and enjoy in the city of Agadir. Among those are the yearly International Fish and Seafood Exhibition held there every November. Since Agadir is known for its fish and seafood industry it is an obvious location for an event that brings together several foreign and domestic seafood suppliers as well almost ten thousand visitors.

Another wonderful attraction that’s caught the eye of tourists from across the globe is the annual Honey Festival. The Honey Festival includes many exhibits and honey tastings at the historic Argana in Agadir. Argana is said to have the largest collection of beehives in the entire world. Among this collection are some very rare species of bees and unique tasting honeys. For music lovers there is the Timitar Festival where the Berber culture is celebrated through the sound of unique and beautiful regional music.
